About the series Terranauten
In 1968, Buckminster Fuller described the Earth as a spaceship, a finely engineered vessel, rich in systems and resources, carrying its crew through the universe. His provocation was simple: we are all astronauts, whether we know it or not. The only question is whether we act like passengers or crew.
Fuller's Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth was never really about technology or design. It was about us. About what human beings are capable of when they finally understand the system they inhabit and take responsibility for it. This question has never been more urgent.
And it has never been more open. Terranauten is a masterclass series by De Groene Afslag School that brings together international thinkers, makers and pioneers at the frontier of new economic thinking. Each session is a navigation exercise: part lecture, part dialogue, part collective inquiry. Together, we explore what it means in this moment, on this planet to be human on Earth. As a living question we hold between us.
In this edition of Terranauten renowned author Daniel Christian Wahl is our special guest.
Aligning with life’s regenerative impulse: Bioregioning as coming home to place and community
An evening in dialogue with Daniel Christian Wahl and Maurits von Hoogevest
Programme
18:30–18:45 Arrival & grounding
Participants settle in. A brief spoken acknowledgement of the place and the bioregion everyone has come from, opening the evening by noticing the living world beyond the room.
18:45–20:15 Dialogue: Daniel will we in dialogue with Shinta and Maurits to explore three fundamental questions:
- What is regeneration and how can we align our practice with this process?
- Why is bioregioning suddenly being talked about again, what is it, and what are the deep roots of this human dwelling pattern?
- How can building and (re)development create conditions conducive to life, and what lessons can we draw from intentional communities and ecovillages to ‘build the new’?
For the third block in particular we count with a special guest Maurits van Hoogevest, who’s recently completed Common Woods development project in Amersfoort has been living into these questions with Daniel in the way the project evolved from idea to completion.
A live, layered dialogue with space for questions woven in.
20:15–20:25 Two deep listening cycles of reflecting with another person gifting attention to sense and digest what the dialogue moved in us
20:25–21:00 Space for dialogue and exchange: Q&A to Daniel and Maurits
Language: English
About Daniel Christian Wahl
Daniel Christian Wahl is one of the leading voices in regenerative design. Author of Designing Regenerative Cultures (2016) and advisor to organisations from the UN to local ecovillage networks, he weaves together ecological systems theory, biomimicry, bioregional thinking, and the question of how human communities can learn, again, to participate in life rather than manage it. His work is a reference point for regenerative economies, ecovillage design, and the emerging field of bioregioning worldwide.
“Bioregioning is our species's tested long-term evolutionary survival pattern and life is inherently regenerative. The question is are we ready to come home to life, to community and the places we steward?”
